Pitney, A Letter From

(Maureen Wincott)  The author is a keen local historian, and has explored many topics in and around Somerset.

During one of these pieces of research she connected with a previously unknown distant relative in Australia, who shared a letter written by her three times great grandmother to her great nephew who had emigrated from Pitney in Somerset.  Several characters from Pitney were mentioned in the letter, and this inspired the author to carry out research around the mass emigration to the colonies from Pitney in the mid-19th century.

Some Amazing stories were unearthed which, most importantly shone a light on the important role women in the 19th century played in the story of emigration.
