Below is a list of upcoming SDFHS events.
Valerie Brenton, from Dorset History Centre, introduces you to a unique collection of letters written by nanny, Maude Dudley, at the beginning of the 20th century. The main focus will be using snippets from Maude’s letters to tell of the daily activities undertaken by a nanny, responsibilities and expectations. You will have an overview of where you might find records for live-in servants and their employers. Maude was nanny to the Williams family of Bridehead, in the Bride Valley.
Valerie Brenton is a professional genealogist, volunteer researcher at Dorset History Centre and co-ordinates the Brenton One-Name Study. She is a MSc alumnus of the University of Strathclyde’s Genealogical, Palaeographic and Heraldic Studies course and has a keen interest in unearthing snippets to bring to life the invisible women of the past.
All welcome, members £2, visitors £4.
The meeting starts at 2pm (doors open a little earlier).
Loders Village Hall, Loders DT6 3SA
Ann Warr – “A Discovery Over Tea and Cake”.
Pete Scrivens “Rev. John Hutchins (1698-1773)”
The talk will discuss recent radiocarbon dating and DNA studies of later Iron age burials from Dorset, which have overturned the believed wisdom regarding the structure of Iron Age society in Dorset. The work has proven Iron Age Durotrigian society to be a female line (matrilocal) society and that the complex societal organisation revealed by what was considered the single event Maiden Castle ‘war cemetery’ was nothing to do with the Roman invasion.
Speaker: Paul Cheetham
