(published in 1989) (Audrey Wirdnam) This book is the result of a detailed study of all the relevant records in the Dorset History Centre and some other record offices. One important source of information has been the work of the Rev. Bernard Hodgson, vicar of the parish from 1775 to 1805, who brought together the details of parish life during the incumbencies of his predecessors.
Villagers of Tolpuddle have also helped with local information, past recollections and photographs.
The authors account of the village is in two parts – before and after 1800. In the early study, old methods of spelling have been retained where possible.
