(Desmond Hawkins)  Cranborne Chase is Dorset’s best kept secret.  Not least of its attractions is that most people are uncertain of where or what it is.  Much of the area is high rolling downland that sprawls untidily across Dorset’s eastern boundary.

Once it was a royal hunting ground, subject to forest law and administered by the Lord of the Chase, and climbing up onto its heights is still like entering a lost world.

The author first explored the Chase over half a century ago, and no-one knows it better.
