This talk explores the establishment and early development of policing in Sturminster Newton, looking at the people who served in the local police force, the work they carried out and the everyday challenges they faced. It will consider what happened before the police station was established, including the role of local magistrates and the ways in which crime and disorder were dealt with. Through real examples of misdemeanours, disputes and other incidents, and the people involved, the talk will bring to life the day-to-day realities of maintaining law and order in the town and surrounding area. Rather than simply following the history of the police force, it will reveal something of the characters, incidents and circumstances that shaped policing in Sturminster Newton.
